The first Reece plumbing hardware store began operations in 1920 in Caulfield, Melbourne, trading as HJ Reece. Reece was incorporated in 1922 and listed on the Melbourne Stock Exchange in 1954. The company edged into the NSW market with a store at Albury in 1978; the first Sydney store opened in Parramatta in 1987.

The following year Reece opened stores in Queensland and the ACT. Reece now has more than 180 stores across Australia. In 2001 reecedesign was opened, an innovative display centre of plumbing supplies and bathroom products for architects and interior designers.
