Portmans was established in Melbourne in the 1950s by the Bloom family, with its first store in Chapel Street, Prahran, aiming for affordable fashion with prices in the low to medium range. The Portmans brand grew within Victoria during the 1960s and expanded to become a national chain by the early 1980s.

Today Portmans is a leading women's fashion retailer with 90 stores in Australia and nine in New Zealand. Stores now feature an updated logo and bold new signage and many have updated shopfits. Since 2002 the Portmans brand and retail stores have been part of the Just Group.
